Time is of the Essence

Many times, we naively live as though our lives on this earth with go on forever.  And, we fail to acknowledge that in an instant our souls could be swept into the presence of the King.

It sickens me to think about how quickly I forget that my life here on earth is only a breath in the grand scheme of eternity.  I get sick to my stomach when I realize how short my life really is and how on a daily basis…

…I waste so much time.

Time is really a precious commodity, one that I often take for granted.

I waste time worrying.
I waste time putsing around on the internet.
I waste time not making a profound impact on others’ lives.
I waste time not loving on my husband and my children.

I realized, it really all comes down to how I view the world and how I view my life.  Scripture tells us…

“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” James 14:4 {ESV}

This past weekend a local family lost their 4-year old daughter in a freak accident.  This was an accident that was completely unforeseeable.  Yet, it has rocked a family, friends, and a community.

Even though I didn’t know this family personally I have mourned the loss of their little girl.  My children aren’t far from the age of that little girl and it made me realize just how terribly short life is.  It made me reflect on all the times that I said things that I wish I hadn’t, or just spent way too much time clicking around on facebook when I could have been doing something more meaningful.

I also spent some time reflecting on what really is important. Sometimes, our daily chores, activities and checking off our “to do” list seem more important than getting on the floor and playing trains with our little boy, reading books to our kids, or just tickling them and laughing.

I realized that even though there is a healthy balance of keeping a house in order, holding my newborn is very much a good use of my time.  As well as fixing a meal for a family that just had a baby is a task that is not done without gratitude from the receiving family.

Time is of the essenceWe are called to use it wisely.  We are called to make a difference in the lives of our husband, children, and community.  And, whatever it takes we need to be reminded of this truth on a daily basis.

We can help ourselves remember by getting on our knees, getting into the Word and asking God to bring it to our minds whenever we forget.  Life is just too short.  It is too short to not be others focused, and it is much to short to not reveal the face of the King to those around us before we are swept up into His Presence.

Question:  What are the things that creep into your life and steal your time?  How could you use your time more wisely, to be “others” focused?  Share your comment by clicking here.

The Power of Renewing Your Mind

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

I am a childbirth doula, and am involved in supporting women during the labor process.  Recently, I went through a certification process to become a Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis Doula.  After extensive talks with two Christian moms who had used the program I decided that it might be a good step for me.

In college, I majored in psychology, so studying the workings of the inner mind was quite fascinating to me.  In a very small nutshell, the program uses self hypnosis in order to help program the inner mind to think positive about giving birth instead of the negative aspects that women are typically influenced by in our society when it comes to childbirth.

This helps the woman to cope with the discomfort of childbirth, because the mind is readily prepared for it.  And, the program also speaks to the fact that when you are watching TV or driving in your car just thinking and then suddenly end up at your destination without really realizing your trip, that is all being in a self-hypnotic state.

As I began to think about these truths, I also began to ponder on the fact that as Christians it truly is difficult to continue to reinforce the positivity of the gospel of God into our heads.  If you watch TV on a regular basis or even listen to secular music you are most likely getting bombarded with worldly ideals that you aren’t even aware of.  These ideals end up influencing everything that you do…

…if you realize it or not.

And, many times they will take you away from the truths of scripture.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you not to do those things, that is between you and God.  Instead, I’m trying to get a point across.

So, we should be encouraged by what Paul is saying in the verse above about “being transformed by the renewing of our minds.”  Spending daily time in God’s word, nearly minute to minute time speaking to Him in prayer, even listening to Christian music, and memorizing scripture can help transform our sinful and much less than perfect selves to have a new mind.  A new mind is a mind that is much like God’s mind.  A mind that thinks, acts, speaks, and lives more like God.  Isn’t that what we are ultimately striving for?

May I suggest that we do not take what Paul is saying lightly.  Lets spend time asking God to give us the deep desire to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  Lets ask Him to give us a burning desire for His word, memorizing scripture and spending overall intimate time with Him.  We will be so glad we did!  We will connect with God more deeply, we will hear His voice more clearly, and chances are we will know what His plans are for our lives more readily.

Blessings on your journey!

God’s heart for the Little Ones

Little Children

I think that it is fairly obvious from scripture that God has an intense and reckless love for children. “And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do … Continue reading →

Do I exercise my faith muscles?

Faith Muscles

Lately, I’ve been asking myself these questions... Have I taken any steps of faith recently? Do I take steps out of my comfort zone? Am I asking God to provide for my needs? Living in a country that has abundant resources can often chip away at one’s faith. Even in times of recession we … Continue reading →
