We all long to know how to do this thing. called. life.
We look to formulas for success. Magazine covers scream “10 Steps to a Better You.” There are thousands of parenting books, marriage books, and self-help books. We long to emulate the success of others. So we ask for secretes and try to follow their instructions. Yet we don’t reach the same level of success or worse their instructions…
…lead us down a path of failure.
What is wrong with me? I wonder. My kids are not perfectly behaved. My marriage is wonderful, but not perfect. I am not getting 1,000 hits a day on my blog.
Why isn’t it working for me?
The truth is — no one formula works for everyone. We all have different personalities, experiences, and relationships. No one formula for life, our careers, ministry, parenting, health/wellness, or marriage will work for everyone.
The only one-size-fits-all formula for life I have found is this:
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13
Fear God. Be in awe of Him, aware of His power and might. Know His love and mercy. Allow His grace to overwhelm us. Remember He holds the universe together and knits us in our mother’s wombs. As we fear God we listen for His guidance. Isaiah 30:21 says, ‘Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”’
Keep His commandments. James calls God’s commands, “the perfect law that gives freedom.” (James 1:25) The law frees us from selfishness and pride. God’s rules call us to love Him and others above ourselves. They encourage us to offer grace and mercy the same way God extends grace and mercy to us.
When we fear God and obey Him our lives are beyond us. What we do matters and lasts for eternity.
So the formula is simple. Fear God. Keep His commandments. Then leave the results to God. If only I could remember it really is that simple. I don’t have to worry about the results I just have to be obedient to fear and follow.
