Time is of the Essence

Many times, we naively live as though our lives on this earth with go on forever.  And, we fail to acknowledge that in an instant our souls could be swept into the presence of the King.

It sickens me to think about how quickly I forget that my life here on earth is only a breath in the grand scheme of eternity.  I get sick to my stomach when I realize how short my life really is and how on a daily basis…

…I waste so much time.

Time is really a precious commodity, one that I often take for granted.

I waste time worrying.
I waste time putsing around on the internet.
I waste time not making a profound impact on others’ lives.
I waste time not loving on my husband and my children.

I realized, it really all comes down to how I view the world and how I view my life.  Scripture tells us…

“Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” James 14:4 {ESV}

This past weekend a local family lost their 4-year old daughter in a freak accident.  This was an accident that was completely unforeseeable.  Yet, it has rocked a family, friends, and a community.

Even though I didn’t know this family personally I have mourned the loss of their little girl.  My children aren’t far from the age of that little girl and it made me realize just how terribly short life is.  It made me reflect on all the times that I said things that I wish I hadn’t, or just spent way too much time clicking around on facebook when I could have been doing something more meaningful.

I also spent some time reflecting on what really is important. Sometimes, our daily chores, activities and checking off our “to do” list seem more important than getting on the floor and playing trains with our little boy, reading books to our kids, or just tickling them and laughing.

I realized that even though there is a healthy balance of keeping a house in order, holding my newborn is very much a good use of my time.  As well as fixing a meal for a family that just had a baby is a task that is not done without gratitude from the receiving family.

Time is of the essenceWe are called to use it wisely.  We are called to make a difference in the lives of our husband, children, and community.  And, whatever it takes we need to be reminded of this truth on a daily basis.

We can help ourselves remember by getting on our knees, getting into the Word and asking God to bring it to our minds whenever we forget.  Life is just too short.  It is too short to not be others focused, and it is much to short to not reveal the face of the King to those around us before we are swept up into His Presence.

Question:  What are the things that creep into your life and steal your time?  How could you use your time more wisely, to be “others” focused?  Share your comment by clicking here.
